Choose an AC repair company that can explain the problem, document the proposed work and give you a clear price before you approve it. When your home is uncomfortable, a short checklist helps you move quickly while keeping control of the decision. For homeowners in Lewisville and surrounding DFW communities, start with these six checks.

1. Check The Texas License Before You Request Service

Ask for the contractor’s license number and use the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation’s active-license search to check the record. Match the company or license holder to the business you are hiring. If a record is missing or unclear, ask the company and TDLR to clarify it before proceeding. A logo, review rating or online advertisement is not a substitute for that check. TDLR active-license search — checked September 17, 2026

Ask for proof of insurance as well. Keep the company name, contact details and written estimate together so you know who is responsible for the work and whom to call afterward.

2. Confirm the visit, the fee and the property type

Describe the symptom: no cooling, uneven temperatures, unusual noise or water around the indoor equipment. Give your city and let the office know whether the home has more than one system. Ask which appointment window is actually available and how you will receive updates.

  • What does the diagnostic charge include?
  • Is that charge credited toward an approved repair, and what conditions apply?
  • Are after-hours charges, additional systems or further testing priced separately?

A service-call special describes the initial visit or its terms; it does not establish the total repair cost. Check the current offer before requesting service. See Prime’s current offers and eligibility

3. Ask for evidence behind the diagnosis

A useful explanation connects your symptoms to what was inspected or measured. Ask what failed, what the proposed repair will correct and whether anything else needs evaluation. Photos, readings and clear notes can help you understand the recommendation without needing to diagnose the equipment yourself.

If replacement is recommended, ask why a repair is unsuitable or less attractive for your situation. Equipment age is one consideration; it should not be the entire explanation. When a recommendation remains unclear, a second opinion can help you compare the reasoning. Compare repair and replacement questions

4. Compare the same written scope

ENERGY STAR recommends written, itemized estimates and a written proposal describing costs, equipment and warranty terms. Compare the work included in each quote, rather than treating two different scopes as interchangeable. ENERGY STAR contractor-hiring guidance — checked September 17, 2026

  • Repair: parts, labor, additional work, total price and what happens if further faults are found.
  • Replacement: indoor and outdoor model numbers, controls, duct changes, permit responsibilities and removal of old equipment.
  • Warranty: parts and labor separately, duration, registration requirements, exclusions and whom to contact.

If the recommendation changes after work starts, ask which new finding changes the original diagnosis, what additional work is proposed and how it changes the total. Request the updated scope and price before deciding on that extra work. If you choose not to proceed, ask which diagnostic or completed-work charges remain. Keep the original approval and revised quote together so the invoice can be compared with the work you authorized.

5. Make sure comfort problems are evaluated

If one room stays hot or airflow is weak, ask how the company will assess the system and ducts. ENERGY STAR’s installation guidance emphasizes sizing for the actual home, airflow, refrigerant charge and duct condition. A larger replacement unit is not an automatic solution to an uncomfortable room. ENERGY STAR quality-installation checklist — checked September 17, 2026

6. Read reviews for the details that matter

Look for recent descriptions of communication, explanations, cleanup and follow-through. Notice how the business responds when something goes wrong. Ask how you will receive the invoice, service notes and any warranty information after the visit.
